A Weekend Off Routein Eryri

Mountains, valleys, Welsh weather and nowhere you need to rush.

There's more to Eryri than one summit

Yr Wyddfa deserves its reputation.

But here's the problem with travelling somewhere incredible and heading directly for the place everybody else is heading:

You can miss everything around it. So this isn't our guide to conquering Yr Wyddfa. It's our argument for giving Eryri an entire weekend.

Friday - arrive, don't conquer

Don't arrive on Friday evening with Saturday already scheduled to the minute.

Get there. Find where you're staying. Walk. Eat. Look at the mountains. Check tomorrow's weather.

Plans made from a sofa three weeks earlier don't need to survive contact with actual Welsh weather.

That's part of the point.

Saturday - pick your adventure

If Yr Wyddfa is why you've come and you have the experience and conditions to tackle it, brilliant.

But plan the logistics before arriving.

During the busy season, Pen y Pass operates a pre-booking system.

It provides access to the Miners' Track and Pyg Track, and Sherpa'r Wyddfa provides another way of reaching the area without trying to park directly at the trailhead.

Check the current arrangement before travelling.

Planning the boring bit properly means you can concentrate on the reason you actually came.

The mountains.

Or don't climb Yr Wyddfa

Here's another idea. Don't. Not because it isn't worth climbing. Because Eryri isn't a one-mountain National Park. Explore valleys. Find lower walks. Spend time around the lakes. Visit villages.

Let the landscape dictate the weekend rather than a list of things the internet told you were mandatory.

Sometimes the best view of a mountain is from somewhere other than its summit.

Take the bus

This might not sound like an adventurous recommendation. It is a useful one.

Sherpa'r Wyddfa connects key locations around Yr Wyddfa and can remove a lot of the stress around trailhead parking.

Leave the car. Watch the landscape instead. Don't spend half the morning hunting for somewhere to park. That's a pretty decent upgrade.

Saturday evening - stay out

Don't automatically retreat indoors when the walking boots come off.

Change. Eat. Then go back outside.

Find somewhere appropriate to watch the light disappear behind the mountains.

This part of the day rarely appears on anybody's itinerary. Maybe it should.

Sunday - take the long road home

Sunday isn't the journey home. It's still part of the weekend. Choose a shorter walk. Explore somewhere you drove past on Friday. Find breakfast. Stop at a lake. Take the scenic road home. You'll get home later. You'll probably survive.

Go responsibly

Eryri is a landscape, but it's also home. Use proper parking. Don't block roads or residential areas. Take litter home. Respect livestock. Check mountain conditions. Know your ability. Change the plan when conditions require it.

Adventure works better when the people who live there are glad you came.

The UNROUTED take

Climb the mountain if that's your adventure. Don't climb it because you feel you're supposed to. There's an entire National Park around you. Give yourself enough time to discover some of it.

OFF ROUTE. ON PURPOSE.
